A FOND farewell and grateful thanks has been given to the "wonderful" members of Macmillan Haslemere and District Committee, which has disbanded after 35 years of fundraising that have amassed more than £350,000.

Treasurer and principal cake taster Jan Bebbington said: “Many of our members are in their 70s and 80s and, sadly, no younger volunteers have come forward with the fresh ideas and surplus energy we needed.

“Three of our founder members, Sue Barnes, Judy Avens and Chris Siddons, remember the early days when letters were sent by post and accounts were recorded laboriously using pencil and notebook, but over the years we discovered emails, spreadsheets and online banking.

“During this time we have held numerous events. It has been a happy time and the friendships we have made will continue. There is a saying ‘once a fundraiser, always a fundraiser’, so in the future, we will still be hosting Macmillan events, but will raise money as individuals.

“On behalf of the committee, a big ‘thank you’ to all the generous people who have helped achieve such a gratifying sum.”
