AS Haslemere came under attack of a simulated flu pandemic, the town turned out in force lastweekend to find out if they have been affected by the deadly virus.

Part of the BBC Pandemic Project which is due to be broadcast next year, the project has set out to find how a close-knit small town such as Haslemere might be affected, along with other studies nationwide.

A filmed event at Haslemere Museum on Sunday revealed the results to the individual app users who took part in the experiment.

They were given a PIN number which enabled them to find out through their smartphones whether or not they would have come into contact with the simulated pandemic.

Results of both ‘outbreaks’ will be televised in a feature-length science documentary presented by Dr Hannah Fry and Dr Javid Abdelmoneim, which is intended for broadcast on BBC4 early next year.

It will commemorate 100 years since the deadly Spanish Flu pandemic killed millions worldwide.

“Both the Nationwide and Haslemere studies have both been going well but we can’t give away any exact figures just yet though,” said a spokesman for the project. The Haslemere Outbreak is a really important part of the project, so we were keen for as many people as possible to hear about the BBC Pandemic app, and be given the opportunity to take part.

“Response from the town has been overwhelmingly positive. Haslemere has a really close-knit community, and a lot of clubs, committees, institutions, and local businesses immediately got behind this project, and offered to help spread the word.

“Their support has really been invaluable,” said the spokesman

“We were also keen to have a physical presence in the town, and found when our team were canvassing, residents responded with genuine curiosity and enthusiasm, so we wanted to repay that by giving them an event that they can really feel involved with.

Although there were a few technical hitches, organisers have apologised to anyone who had problems in joining the Haslemere Outbreak.

Anyone unable to attend the event should have received a notification with a PIN to find out whether they would have been infected by the ‘pandemic’. For anyone who has notifications turned off, the codes are 8195 for Apple IOS and 8165 for Android.
