THE vicar of St Peter’s Lynchmere and St Paul’s Camelsdale has tendered his resignation as priest in charge from the end of September but he will continue to serve in the parish as assistant curate.
Rev Talks confirmed his decision to step down as priest in charge was connected to the ongoing Lynchmere campaign to buy St Michael’s Hall, which was pronounced surplus to requirements last year by the Diocese of Chichester and put up for sale against the wishes of villagers.
Mr Talks, as one of the hall trustees, was instrumental in the decision to give local residents opposed to the sale of St Michael’s Hall because it could have a damaging effect on the adjoining village hall, extra time to try and buy it back.
But the row has deeply divided the local community. Rev Derek Welsman, vicar of St Mary’s Church, in Easebourne, will be appointed priest-in-charge of Lynchmere and Camelsdale.
The parochial church council of Lynchmere and Camelsdale is currently exploring the possibilities of the Camelsdale parish being transferred into the Guildford Diocese.
A Diocese of Chichester spokesman said: “A consultation with parishioners of both dioceses will give plenty of opportunity for any views to be expressed. This is an open process and takes quite some time so an outcome is not expected for a while.
“Both dioceses would also need to be formally consulted in the event of any change being recommended. So we are some way off that happening yet. Normal service pattern and pastoral care will continue throughout.”
