FRESH plans have been submitted for a central site in Haslemere given planning consent on appeal for a mixed development of 39 flats and office space with basement parking, in 2011.

Despite getting the green light, the boarded-up site , an old motorcyle showroom which streches for around three-quarters-of-an-acre from the railway bridge by Haslemere station and up Wey Hill to the Majestic Wine Centre, has not been developed.

Waverley planners objected that the original scheme was too big, and claimed it lacked affordable housing and adequate parking. It would also increase traffic levels.

But the planning inspector granted the development on appeal and awarded costs of £34,750 against Waverley on the grounds it had failed to provide evidence to show clearly why the application should be refused.

Now the same owners, Brettenwood Investment Holdings, have applied for permission to build a residential rather than a mixed-use development.

Planning consent is being sought for 31 one-bed and 24 two-bed flats specifically marketed at the over 55s, in three separate blocks with on-site parking, private gardens and a communal garden.

The design and access statement supporting the plan states: “The objective of the brief is to transform this vacant site with residential accommodation and ensure it is sympathetic to its setting and enhances the character of the surrounding area, to ensure it respects the amenity of neighbouring properties, to ensure it provides external amenity space and appropriate parking and respects the suburban character of the site and creates a modern addition to the housing stock.”

Waverley is planning to determined the application on Thursday, February 25.
