THERE was a big welcome from the town when newly revamped Haslemere High Street pub, The Swan Inn, officially reopened last Friday night.

The former coaching inn – founded in 1855 – was sold by Wetherspoon’s in the summer to the Stonegate Pub Company, the UK’s largest pub operator,

It has spent £400,000 on a major restoration. Town crier Christian Ashdown rang in the good news with mayor Melanie Odell cutting the ribbon.

Pub manager Paul Priestley’s team of 32 staff were kept busy serving guests champagne and canapés at a special reception before the party to mark the pub’s re-launch.

Customers were able to meet the head brewer of Upham brewery and try out their cask ales.

The Swan’s will rotate a choice from Upham, Hogs Back and Surrey Hills breweries as well as serving national ales. Craft beers Brooklyn lager, Meantime and Brewdog IPA are also on tap. A wide range of wines and classic cocktails, also feature and the menu will feature British pub favourites.

Mr Priestley said: “I am thrilled we have been able to revitalise such an historic building and create an exciting new chapter in its history. The Swan’s new offer will be a world away from what is was previously and I look forward to meeting and welcoming the people of the town to the pub so they may enjoy it as it is now - a great British pub to be proud of.”
