A NEW payment option to make parking in Waverley pay and display more user-friendly is being trialled for three months in Cranleigh. If adopted across the borough, it will allow drivers to pay at the end of their visit for the time they have actually been parked.

Richard Homewood, head of environmental services at Waverley Borough Council, said: “This payment system gives our customers more freedom to park for the amount of time they need, without having to worry about tickets expiring and getting a fine.

“Drivers will not need to pre-select the amount of time they want to park as the charge is calculated on exit - that’s why it is important for drivers to remember to check out or they will be charged with a full day tariff. We hope this will make it easier for people.”

In April, Waverley suspended its controversial new disabled parking charges to conduct a further review, following widespread criticism. More than 300 people signed an online petition calling on the council to reverse its decision.

The council implemented new charges for Blue Badge holders in the borough’s car parks on April 3, removing the three-hours free parking provision previously enjoyed by disabled drivers and passengers.

Under the changes, Blue Badge holders on income-related benefits can still apply to the council for a free Waverley disabled parking permit.
