PREP students at The Royal School learned some of the responsibilities of parenting firsthand in a rather surprising way for a fortnight.

Inspired by Anne Fine’s award-winning book ‘The Flour Babies’, they each dressed, named and personalised a 1.5kg bag of flour and looked after it as if it was their own. They also had to keep a diary, just like the characters in the book.

When George took his flour baby to the school’s ‘Grow For It’ event, he was able to introduce Britain’s best-loved gardener Alan Titchmarsh to his new charge.

George (pictured with the former Groundforce presenter) said.“Apparently this was the first time Alan had met a ‘Flour Baby’ and he said he enjoyed having his photo taken with someone who did not fidget,”
