VELO South charity bike ride road closures are lawful and the event can go ahead on Sunday.

West Sussex County Council confirmed this afternoon that a last ditch legal challenge by objectors against road closures of up to nine hours had failed.

The Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders (TTROs) required for the event organiser, CSM Active, to hold its 100 mile event for 15,000 cyclists have now been made.

Diversions will be in place and motorists are advised to plan ahead.

The A286 will be closed at Fernhurst for nine hours from 8.15am to enable the 15,000 cyclists competing in the event to cross from Vann Road to Church Road.

Traffic lights will operate on the A283 at Fisherstreet from 8am to 4pm.

CSM Active will input road closure information into the traffic management system used by major Sat Nav providers.

County council and private care providers have been contacted to ensure that they are prepared for the event and have made appropriate arrangements to fulfil the care requirements of people within their care, utilising CSM Active’s event marshals to provide special access where required

Meals on Wheels service provision is affected but the provider has worked closely with CSM Active to ensure that customers receive their meals on the day, although times might vary slightly. Customers have been informed but are advised to speak to their delivery driver, or ring the apetito office on 01903 718893, if they have any final questions.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue service has extra resources in place along the event route to ensure it can respond to incidents on time.

Some bus services will be impacted, especially routes between Worthing and Midhurst.

Residents are advised to contact Stagecoach for more information and to plan their journey accordingly: www.stagecoachbus.com.

A spokesperson for West Sussex County Council said: “West Sussex County Council’s Highways and Transport department has confirmed that all of the requirements for approving the Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders for this Sunday’s Velo South have been met and the Orders have been signed and sealed, dated today.

“Wider West Sussex County Council services are ready for this event and CSM Active has set up an event hotline should residents have any questions or concerns on the day: 01243 935359. We would like to thank all residents and businesses for their patience and support and wish all participants a safe ride on Sunday.”
