MEMBERS of Liphook’s Royal British Legion branch held a skittles evening raising £430 towards a memorial book and presentation stand, to commemorate 35 members of the parish who had fallen in both world wars.

During the evening Terry and Carole Burns presented the Bramshott War Memorial Trust chairman, Andrew Meech, with a cheque for £220 from the proceeds of December’s annual Christmas carol singing in The Square.

District councillor Angela Glass also pledged £1,000 towards the book of remembrance.

Mr Meech, along with fellow RBL member Bob Hall and St Mary’s church warden Kay Murray, launched the project 18 months ago, after Andy Lucas established that 35 servicemen from the parish, who had died in both World Wars, were not currently mentioned on the memorial.

Andrew said: “It was decided we needed to add all these names and as there was not enough room on the memorial itself – we would commission a memorial book and lectern to be sited in the church, which would contain the names of the existing and new servicemen.

“The cost is estimated at approximately £2,000 and, so far, we are doing well with the funding. Any extra funds we receive will go towards the upkeep of the memorial which is an ongoing process.”

The skittles tournament was held at Bramshott and Liphook Social Club, where nine teams of five each battled it out to win the trophy.

Top scorers were Irene Ellis, for the ladies, who was also presented with a cheque of £220 from the carol singing in her capacity as chairman of the Liphook Community Laundry, while RBL member Daegan Inwarrd achieved the best score for the men.
