THREE young writers from the Royal School school in Haslemere have scooped the top places in their age categories in the preliminary round of this year’s Rotary Young Writer competition.

Winners of the national competition which promotes and encourages the work of young people who show talent are subsequently published in Rotary magazines. Entrants need to write or type a story in prose; with the finished piece being up to 500 words or one side of A4.

This year’s theme was Reflection with Kate from year eight winning first prize in the 11-13 age category and Eve and Jessica G also from year eight gaining joint second place. Their work will now go through to be judged in the South East regional heats.

Mr Donal O’Neill and Mrs Maine, from Farnham Rotary Club, addressed an assembly at the senior school to explain about the competition, the judging and to award the prizes.

Head of English Cate Bartles congratulated the winners and thanked the English department for encouraging so many high quality entries.
