SIXTEEN juniors teamed up with adult relatives to compete for the Wadham Cup in The Bourne Club’s annual Family Tournament.
This year, the Williams Cup was added to the event so that club members aged 10 and under could play alongside a grandparent, aunt, uncle or parent for a trophy.
The new cup was donated by the Williams family in memory of Ross Williams, an active member who participated in the 24-hour marathon challenge at the National Tennis Centre to raise money for Bourne Club’s tennis bubble.
Despite the poignancy of its origin, the Williams Cup allowed an additional eight family pairs to compete in this enjoyable tournament. The new trophy was won by Cassian Gordon and his dad, Andrew, and the runners-up were Emma Grantham and her mum, Sarah.
The Wadham Cup, donated in memory of another much missed Bourne Club first-team member, Nigel Wadham, was hotly contested by 16 family pairs. Round-robin matches were followed by quarter-finals and semis, and father-and-daughter Matthew and Elle Wright eventually defeated Alec Murray and his father Malcolm in the final.
The afternoon was not all fun and laughter, with one pair having to pull out when an adult player sustained a torn achilles tendon.
The trophies were presented by Charlie Wadham.
Andy Warry, Bourne Club’s head coach and tournament organiser, said: “It was great to see so many family pairs competing. There was a wide range of ages, right down to the youngest, Sam Nelson, aged seven, who put in a great performance.
“I would like to thank the Wadham and Williams families for their support and generosity in providing the cups. This fantastic family tournament brings a lot of happiness to our young members.”
