CHAWTON Park Indoor Bowling Club men made the perfect start to their Hampshire League Bramley Bowl campaign at the weekend, beating Atherley on three out of four rinks and by 100 shots to 66 overall.
Mark Fyfield’s rink of Barry Smith, Marc Gorman and David Sims dominated from the first end and ran out 32-10 winners. The other home rink, led by Adam White, had a far tighter game and the final score of 28-19 was rather flattering.
Chawton’s away rinks, skipped by Graham Robinson and Nathan Beeson, were all square overall at 10 ends. Robinson, Robert Hutchinson, Ron Roberts and John Kellow eventually secured a 24-14 victory. The Beeson rink, with a completely new combination, went down 16-23.
Chawton Park had a mixed bag of results in national competitions. The double-rink teams were beaten by Bournemouth (34-26) and Palmerston (37-25).
In the national singles, Graham Robinson and Gary Johnson lost at Banister Park and Atherley respectively. David Sims lost at home, while Margaret Holden was beaten 21-16 by Chris Doig (Riverside) in the Champion of Champions.
However, Robert Hutchinson and Graham Robinson recorded a convincing 21-7 win over Jim Tarrant’s Riverside duo in the national pairs. In an all-Chawton affair, Barry Smith and Mark Fyfield overcame David Sims and John Kellow 22-14.
Lesley Johnson and Margaret Holden were surprisingly easy winners over Yvonne Grant’s Loddon Vale in the ladies’ pairs.
In the fours, Adam White (skip), Barry Smith, Dick Holden and Mark Fyfield demolished Steve Spreadbury’s Atherley rink 26-6 after 14 ends.
Danny Brown played out a close encounter with Daniel Kasper (Atherley) in the U25 singles. The Chawton man eventually won 2-0 in the tie-break.
Chawton Park captain Ian Webster was in jubilant mood after his team recorded their first win of the season in friendly matches. They defeated Four Marks BC by just four shots.
