CHAWTON Park Indoor Bowls Club continue to prosper in national competitions.

Adam White is already at Melton Mowbray in the two-wood singles on March 23 and will be returning a week later to contest the four-wood singles, having defeated Tom Warner (Five Rivers) 21-18 in the area final at Banister Park.

Graham Robinson won his way through to the O60s singles area final with a 21-16 win over Jim Tarrant (Riverside) and will now face Charlie Bailey (Victory) at Warners Hayling Island for a place at the nationals.

Also in the hunt are Beryl Collier and Margaret Leppard who came away from Victory IBC with an excellent 18-11 win over Rosemary Bailey and Wendy Brown and now face Bournemouth pair Jean Arnaud and Joan Halliwell for a place in the O60s pairs. Graham Robinson’s O60s four of Robert Hutchinson, Charlie Spear and Gary Johnson came up against the current national champions from Victory, skipped by Barry Starks, in their area final and had to settle for second best, going down 20-7.

Beryl Collier, Margaret Holden and Margaret Leppard were comfortable winners over Hazel Tardiff’s Banister trio and take their place in the Hampshire women’s triples final. Sue Murray joined the three to inflict more pain on Banister with another emphatic win, this time over Jane Gould’s rink, to clinch their place in the county fours final. And with a two-wood triples semi-final looming, the Chawton ladies could find themselves very busy on finals day.

Chawton have two mixed pairings through to the semi-finals. Alice Atwell and Mark Fyfield travelled to Victory and recorded a fine 20-14 win over Tina Chambers and Gary Starks. In an all-Chawton quarter-final, Sue Murray and David Sims finally secured their place in the last four with a two-shot win over Lesley and Gary Johnson who had recovered strongly from being 10-1 down.

There was no joy in the county mixed fours. A below-par team of Dick Holden, Margaret Leppard, Margaret Holden and Adam White lost to the Pete Cummins rink, while Kate Fyfield, Alice Atwell, Dave Atwell and Mark Fyfield lost by just one shot to Gary Carter’s rink at Atherley.

Barry Smith, Dick Holden and Dave Turner lost their two-wood triples quarter-final to Dougie Morgan’s Loddon Vale trio, 19-10. David Sims and Adam White kept the flag flying with a two-shot win over Palmerston’s Jeff Passmore and Bill Jackson. Under-25s Danny Brown and Reece Graham both suffered at the hands of more experienced opponents Daniel Taylor and Ashley Nethercliffe.

The ladies were in Riversmeet League action last weekend and an excellent match against Loddon Vale ended 66 shots each. Chawton trailed by 11 shots at 15 ends, but the rink scores were close and the result remained in the balance until the final ends. Margaret Leppard’s rink picked up five shots without reply to win 22-17 and Beryl Collier’s rink finished 18-all.
