WITH promotion secured and the Surrey Championship Division?Five title all but in the bag, Haslemere will now concentrate on finishing the season with an unbeaten record.

Leigh Thayre’s side are home to Merrow this Saturday and close the season away to third-placed Chertsey on September 2.

Judging by their ruthless display against relegated Farncombe last Saturday, Haslemere are more than capable of arriving in Division?Four as undefeated champions.

Haslemere’s innings, after being inserted at the Rec, will have had their members scanning the record books. Chris Hooker and Chris Spooner plundered the Farncombe attack for a century apiece and shared an opening partnership of 207.

The pair dealt in fours rather than sixes, and they did a lot of running on this big ground with a damp outfield.

Hooker’s unbeaten 111 contained 14 boundaries, while Spooner hit 12 fours and had reached a round 100 when he was bowled by Adam Appleton.

It was Farncombe’s only success as, for good measure, Scott Boxall (31 not out) added 50 with Hooker and Haslemere posted 257-1 from their 50 overs.

Skipper Appleton and Ben Dray put on 40 for Farncombe’s first wicket and Matt Jaggard (34) and Cameron Harrison took it on to 70-2.

Simon Eastment broke that stand and then slow bowlers Sam Williams (3-29 in 8 overs) and Spooner got to work.

Spooner brought the game to a sudden end by taking 3-3 in 15 balls and Farncombe collapsed to 113 all out.

Three more points will clinch the championship for Haslemere.
