SAM Allardyce oversaw his 1000th game as manager as Everton drew 1-1 with West Bromwich last weekend and the statistics of his long career reveal a remarkable fact – of the 104 teams he has faced in that time, the only one he has never got a positive result against is ... Aldershot.
One of the most outstanding results in Aldershot Town’s short history (formed 1992) came in August, 2011 when they beat West Ham 2-1 in the first round of the Carling Cup, and Herald reporter Dan Gee was at Upton Park to see it.
“And what a game it was,” he reminisced. “I witnessed Danny Hylton’s 89th-minute winner alongside club co-founder Graham Brookland in the press box – and waited about an hour for a very grumpy Sam Allardyce to give his post-match interview.
“It was one of the most memorable campaigns in the club’s history. The Dean Holdsworth-led Shots eventually progressed to the fourth round where they lost at home to little-known northern minnows, Manchester United.”
