CAMBERLEY TN 5, FARNHAM TN 0

FARNHAM Town’s steady progress towards mid-table safety in the Combined Counties Premier Division was rudely interrupted by Camberley last Saturday.

And it was former Farnham player Matt Bunyan who inflicted the pain, scoring four of Camberley’s five goals, including a hat-trick in the first half-hour.

“He had some good coaching at his previous club,” said Paul Tanner drily, although the Farnham manager did praise the finishing ability of the striker.

“There are no excuses – Camberley deserved what they got. We were naive and he (Bunyan) is the sort of player who can really punish you.”

Farnham were lacking what they required on the day – experience. “I could name an experienced side from the players who weren’t available and that’s what we needed against Camberley,” said Tanner.

Farnham lacked the know-how of senior players such as Darren Wilson and Ben Williams (both injured) and Mark Corbett (temporarily lost to international beach football) and the youthful zest of Matt Glass and Jack Dillon, also sidelined by injury.

The visitors found themselves overrun in midfield and it took Camberley only 14 minutes to take the lead, Bunyan stepping round his marker and drilling the ball into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Almost immediately, Joe Sowden had Farnham’s only decent shot of the game, forcing a superb save.

Three minutes later, with Farnham standing still after losing posession, Bunyan doubled the lead with an unchallenged header and, on the half-hour mark, he completed his hat-trick.

For 20 minutes of the second half, Farnham held their own, but then Camberley swooped on a poor clearance, a cross came in and Bunyan snapped up his fourth with another free header.

Within two minutes, Matt Humphrey added the fifth, setting Camberley up nicely for their trip to Newhaven this Saturday in the second round of the FA Vase.

Farnham are home to second-placed Ashford in another formidable test for Paul Tanner’s under-strength side.
