FARNHAM TN 1, THAME UTD 1
(Farnham won 4-2 on pens)
AFTER Sunday’s 1-1 stalemate, Farnham made sure of their place in the preliminary round of the FA Cup in Tuesday’s replay, but only after a penalty shoot-out,
It ended one apiece at the Memorial Ground, both goals coming in the final minutes of extra time.
Matt Petts was Town’s hero after saving Thame’s second penalty. The visitors’ fourth spot kick struck the crossbar and Farnham were through, 4-2, after successful penalties by Jack Dillon, John Lancashire, Mark Corbett and Dave Thomas.
Chances had been made and missed at both ends in normal time, with both goalkeepers in fine form.
Come extra time, both sides were still going hammer and tongs in search of a winner.
With three minutes left, Thame punished a defensive mistake and the Hellenic Premier League side celebrated what they thought was the winner.
But two substitues combined to get Farnham out of jail. Josh Dixon provided the cross and Sam Pedersen volleyed the equaliser.
And so to the shoot-out ...
Farnham’s reward is a home tie against Highworth Town on August 29.
Farnham conceded from a corner after just four minutes at Meadow View Park on Sunday, but the goal galvanised them into some good play and they made numerous chances, only to lack the finishing touch.
Eventually, just before half-time, Mark Corbett picked up a long clearance from a corner and volleyed home in style.
Two excellent goalkeepers took the honours in the second half and the sides settled for the replay.
