A superb second-half fightback saw Liss Athletic claim a memorable 3-2 victory against Hampshire Premier Football League Senior Division leaders Colden Common at Newman Collard on Saturday.

A double from centre-half Dan Clark helped inspire the Blues to turn the game on its head, as they trailed 2-0 with around 20 minutes remaining.

Harry Stanbridge ran through to add a third six minutes from time, to the delight of their vocal fans.

The aftermath of the winner saw visiting goalkeeper Jon Webb dismissed for something he said to the match official.

Mark Glazier’s side held on to become only the second side this season to defeat the Stallions in the Hampshire Premier League, after Clanfield, who completed the home-and-away double.

Saturday’s win followed up a superb 6-3 victory at Winchester Castle last Tuesday night (May 9).

A Dave Evans double – his first senior goals of the campaign – helped Liss to their thumping win.

A frenetic first half saw seven of the evening’s nine goals scored, as Liss raced into a 5-2 advantage at the interval, with some impressive passages of play that carved apart their beleaguered hosts.

Josh Hayles got the Blues off to a flyer with a bullet header with just five minutes gone, before Theo Glazier dispatched coolly from the penalty spot two minutes later after Johnny Kracmar was upended in the box.

Evans struck his first of the night inside the quarter hour, before the hosts pulled two back. But Castle’s hopes of a comeback were dented as Evans ran through to smash home a fourth for Mark Glazier’s side, before Charlie Harrison got in on the act with an unstoppable right-foot volley into the top corner.

All the goals came inside the hour – Winchester clawing back another, before Angus MacKay rounded things off with a super curling effort from the edge of the box.

The only sour note of a fine team performance was the dismissal of captain Hayles, for two yellow cards, with 12 minutes to go.

However, the man disadvantage didn’t deter Liss, who could have added more late on with Evans denied his hat-trick and MacKay firing over from close range.

Liss have moved up to 12th place in the Senior Division table with 37 points from their 31 games.

They visit seventh-placed Stockbridge on Saturday (3pm) in their final fixture of the season – where they’ll be without Hayles.

The midfielder starts the first of a two-game suspension following his dismissal in the win at Winchester Castle.
