Sholing 0, Alresford Town 1
A SPECTACULAR goal from Paul Coventry earned Alresford Town a place in the final of the Southampton Senior Cup with an upset win over Sholing on Tuesday night.
Coventry sent a vicious dipping volley into the net from fully 25 yards for the only goal of the game at AFC Stoneham’s ground to see off the runaway Wessex League Premier Division leaders.
The stunning 1-0 win for the Magpies sets up a final against either Winchester City or Stoneham at St Mary’s Stadium, the home of Premier League Southampton.
Tuesday night’s cup heroics followed a gutsy second-half comeback by the Magpies to earn a point against Lymington Town at Arlebury Park on Saturday.
Trailing 2-0 to their mid-table rivals from the New Forest, goals from George Farrelly and Steve Hall salvaged a draw to keep the Magpies in sixth place.
High-flying Horndean had a mixed week in the Premier Division, drawing 1-1 at Christchurch on Saturday before losing 2-0 at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday night.
