ALDERSHOT Town may not yet be top of the league, but they may soon be top of the charts.
Danny Searle’s National League battlers have swapped shinpads for songsheets and Cruyff turns for a turn at the mic to produce a charity single in aid of young people’s charity Step By Step.
Reprising the festive classic Do They Know It’s Christmas? with music teaching service the Rock & Pop Foundation, the footballers took a shot at the musical big time to raise cash for the charity which helps ease the plight of struggling youngsters.
“It was a bit of fun, we wanted to do something for charity, something a little bit different to what we have done previously,” said boss Searle, who doesn’t think the likes of Bob Geldof, Midge Ure and Bono have anything to worry about just yet.
“The general consensus was that it didn’t sound unbelievably great,” he admitted, “but it wasn’t meant to, it was a chance for people to donate – even if only to stop us from ever doing it again!
“And if it puts some money in the pockets of the charity, then it’s been well worth doing.”
Searle’s Shots were today also due to visit young children spending Christmas in hospital – with the boss and his players heading to Frimley Park and The Royal Surrey in Guildford.
And the manager had a special Christmas message for Shots fans young and old.
“All I can say is thank you for your support so far this season, it’s been amazing.
“I know it hasn’t been easy, and we know that as a staff, and we appreciate the fact that they turn out in their numbers for us week in, week out.
“And long may that continue because we genuinely believe that we are on the cusp of turning a real corner and we can put some results together that hopefully makes it all worthwhile.”
