Badshot Lea sit proudly top of the pile in the Combined Counties Premier South table after a convincing 3-0 win at Frimley Green on Tuesday night.

Second-half goals by Adam New, Jake Hawker and Dean Rule wrapped up the three points.

Co-manager Gavin Smith said it was nice to see his team top of the table – but no-one was getting carried away.

“It’s early days although it’s always good to get wins early in the season,” he said.

“We were very good. We usually struggle at Frimley – it’s one of those places we never seem to do well – but we were up for it from the start and could have been 3-0 up after 20 minutes.

“We created a lot of chances and they didn’t have a sniff in the first half – we really dominated things. At half-time the lads were disappointed not to be ahead but we told them to keep doing the right things, and it all worked out.”

Once Zac Hawker was sent off for a bad tackle, Frimley were never really in it – and they finished with nine men after having a player sin-binned late on.

Craig Bradshaw – who was sent off at the same ground last season when he was making his Baggies’ debut – made a superb save at 1-0 to keep the lead intact, but after that it was plain sailing.

Smith said: “Our performance was very mature and we looked very good.

“We need to keep ticking off the wins as we go.

“We have a busy weekend, with the Vase match at home to Baffins Milton Rovers on Saturday – I’m expecting them to be a decent side – and then the league trip to Alton on bank-holiday Monday. It’s tough on the players but it’s the same for everyone I suppose.”

The Baggies exited the FA Cup last Saturday with a 3-2 defeat at Southern League Hamworthy.

“We never really turned up – we started well and went in at half time 1-0 up, but we played like 11 individuals and you could tell Hamworthy were a class above us.

“We seemed to be waiting for something to happen although Mal Thomas had a chance to score before we scored again late on – but we didn’t really deserve to get anything from the game.

“We need the luck of the draw in the FA Cup and it hasn’t worked for us for the past couple of years. But the Vase this weekend? I don’t expect us to lose to anyone from our own level of football...”
