HASLEMERE Hockey Club hosted their annual Club Day last weekend and, as usual, the excellent facilities at Woolmer Hill were used to capacity.

There was action on both the astroturf pitches from 12 noon. A hard-fought game between the ladies 2nd and 3rd XIs ended in a draw, while Haslemere won a men’s Masters Cup match against local rivals Guildford by 1-0. The men’s 1st XI played the 2nd XI in three short assorted training sessions, with honours fairly even.

The ladies 1st XI were in action at Alton and lost a close match 3-2.

The day continued with a sociable session from 3pm. Forty players, old and new, male and female, and of all standards, turned up to play eight-a-side games in the popular round-robin format. After the hockey, there was food and music in the clubhouse.

The club day was followed on Sunday by a successful start to training for the junior section. Youngsters aged from six to 16 trained on the two pitches and the U14 boys played their first Mercian League match against Sunbury & Walton Hawks, the visitors winning 3-1.

The Haslemere Flyerz were also back in action at The Edge on Sunday. This section of the club – for young people with special educational deeds and their families – has enjoyed a great summer, including a visit to the Olympic Park for the European Championships.
