FARNHAM Knights travel to Leicester Road Stadium for the Southern Football Conference Division One Bowl final against Solent Thrashers this Sunday.
The sides have already met twice in the regular season. The Knights won the first encounter 38-30, while the second finished in a 33-33 tie. It therefore promises to be an epic game.
After a successful regular season, with eight wins, a tie and a narrow loss at home to Birmingham Bulls, the Knights secured their third second-tier Bowl final appearance with a comfortable win over Hertfordshire Cheetahs.
Their previous finals, in 2000 and 2007, were both against Ipswich Cardinals. The opposition is different this time, but the Farnham side are hoping for the same result and a third Bowl triumph to add to their National Championship in 2004.
Head coach Steve Rains said: “The team has made great progress over the past two years, coming back from the darkest period in the club’s 30-year history when the senior team were forced to sit out the 2012 season due to lack of numbers and finances.
“We now have an opportunity to take the club back to the top division (a Bowl win will clinch promotion) and that has come through hard work by everyone involved in the club.”
Several young players have made their mark this year and with the club’s junior and youth programmes continuing to feed the senior team, the future looks bright for Farnham Knights.
“The real key has been the great team spirit,” added Rains. “This will be a tough one to win, but I know we will give everything to finish the job.”
The Bowl final kicks off at 4pm.
