THE 450 entrants for the Ryde Harriers 10-mile race, the seventh event of the Hampshire Road Race League, included a contingent from Alton Runners.

This is the only HRRL meeting to be held on the Isle of Wight and the challenging route included some long, steep hills.

First back for Alton Runners was Lenny Passingham whose Hampshire Road Race League position was an excellent ninth in a time of 58-55 and he was first in his age category.

Eli Dawson finished 94th in 1-10-57 and other men’s results were: Philip Scrase 119th, 1-14-07; Mike Sennett 133rd, personal best 1-15-10; Jim Armitage 162nd, 1-20-09; Mike Pearce 166th, 1-21-57 (2nd age category); Jeff Smart 186th, 1-25-53; Richard Scrase 220th, 1-49-43.

Vanessa Lowe, first to finish for the Alton ladies, recorded 1-15-08 for a league placing of 24th and she was also second in her age category.

She was followed by Fran Light in 74th and a time of 1-28-44. Other ladies’ results: Jane Scrase 94th, 1-33-00; Caroline Freeman 133rd, 1-50-41.

The Alton ladies A team came sixth and are now fifth overall in Division 2, while the men’s A finished second and lie second overall in Division 3.

In the B league, the ladies remain third overall in Division 2. The men came eighth and are seventh overall in Division 2.
